Questions, questions

Since I’ve started this thing on social media and reached out to many people in the unsigned world, I’ve virtually “met” countless passionate individuals both sides of the mic.

I’ve been interviewed a few times, and each time I enjoyed the conversation, as much as I hope people listening or reading have enjoyed it…

Still I’ve always felt that I needed to know more about the one behind the mic or the email, because as much as it’s fun to be asked questions about your passion, it’s also a bit frustrating because it only goes one way.

So I’ve started thinking (yes, this happens to me sometimes, I try to reduce that to a minimum, I assure you!), and came to the conclusion that I would like to reverse the roles for a moment, basically interview the interviewers… Not quite sure yet what form this will take, could be a written interview via email, or a Skype conversation, and it could be published in writing or as a podcast, or both.

I’ll probably need to add yet another section to this website which is becoming a monster hub of many things (hopefully fun!), but I think it would be nice to hear about these people that I call partners: Radio hosts, bloggers, promoters, etc… How they got the bug, how they started, how they operate, what are their goals and ambitions, what they think about the state of the music industry… I believe there are a lot of subjects that could be discussed and this could shine a light on those unsung heroes of the unsigned world.

What do you think? Do you have any suggestions? Are you a partner that would like to give this a try? Let me know in the comments below…

If i asked anyone to do my garden for nothing i only know the answer i would get .If My boss asked me to come into work for nuthin i would tell him to F..........etc .....Musicians work bloody hard and invest a lot of money into thier music -NOT JUST TO BE GIVEN A KINDLY TWEET or a PROMISE of Oh i will be back ....the list goes on and its a bug bear fro every musician .I say fuck Itunes ,Spotify and make it illegal ( to the point of fines ) to use Music illegaly .now im having a beer

I hear you Jim! We live in very frustrating time, because not much people put value in music anymore. It hurts indeed. But in this post I was talking about the ones who do, the radios and blogs and podcasters and show hosts and venue owners and indie labels and promoters who care, and who also have a passion for music and deserve to be heard too!

While it is off topic I also agree with Jim, but also want him to know there are some non musicians out there, busting there ass for nothing to promote independent artists. As such I think it's a great idea Patrick. I have some names of people, that I know of, who work hard, honestly and not for the glory of to get their name plastered all over the Internet, or make money off of others hard work. I will put that together for you if interested. I will also give you the list of who I wouldn't interview, though I bet you already know, because they are in it for all the wrong reasons.

Thanks for visiting and your comment, Al! I agree with you, there are some people busting their ass off for the love of music, on both sides of the mic. And I'm happy to hear who you would recommend, and although I might know some of the others I trust you to point me to the good ones. :)

I have to agree with Al Yardy. We all know and respect the fact the musicians work their butts off to get their music out there. I have nothing but respect for them. But there are also a ton of online station owners working their butts off to get those artists' music out there. I average 30 - 40 hours a week on top of my full time job and don't make a dime. Why? because the music out there is great and there's no better feeling than helping someone accomplish their dreams. I would love to get the inside scoop on some of the other station owners out there.

Thanks for the visit, Randy! I think that's precisely the point, I'd love to hear about what you do, and I'm sure a lot of artists would like that, and learn more about the other side. My aim as always is to shine a light on the good people who are doing it with passion and make people realize how much work there is behind it.

My feelings are very much along the same lines as Randy's. My admiration for the musicians doing it the hard (and right) way knows no bounds. I admire their talent and dedication so much and wish that the industry was not as stacked up against them as it is. Hopefully, Patrick, you have started a ball rolling to redress this though the ball has a long way to travel, I fear, and does not naturally roll up hills. Why do we turn out on a cold, wet, dark Tuesday night in January to do our show? Because, on occasions, I have experienced such electricity discovering new music from 'unknown' artists and, also, such a buzz from the feedback that we get from listeners hearing it for the first time and experiencing the same feelings as us. Sounds a bit pretentious, I know, but I can honestly say that if we had decided to play chart music on our show, there's no way I'd still be getting cold and wet every Tuesday night.

Hi Peter! Thanks for your comment. I totally understand your point. It's not pretentious at all. And this is precisely the kind of stuff I want to discuss about, what you do all the time and how and have people realize what this entails, how it's rewarding but also a lot of work and that everyone including artists, need to realize that, and consider you as true partners.

Count me in. I'm not too sure if it is because I am a nosy so and so or it would be just interesting to see the 'real' blogger, host, promoter etc. I'd be keen to learn if others are driven by the same things that drive me (perhaps I'm not that weird after all)

Always happy to talk - probably easiest via the written word (time zone and tech). Have to agree with some of the comments above: like Randy, I put a lot of time and effort into making and promoting my radio shows, on top of what I do to earn a crust and the work on our homestead, because I believe that the best way to promote really good music is on a personal recommendation.

I’m interested. Coincidentally, I’ve just started something similar on our platform, which is a digital radio station/ stream cast. Done two so far and have another on deck in hope of giving listeners a live audio glimpse of the independent artists behind the music. Conversely, and as a radio station producer, I’d be willing to share my experiences via advance scripted questions.
